General Guide to Commissioning Work
Commissioning a piece of work is very straightforward and the client is involved at each stage of creation.
- A meeting is arranged to discuss text, stone, letterforms and positioning. A visit to the workshop is encouraged as examples of stone are available and furthermore, work in progress can offer guidance and inspiration. I work very closely with the client to ensure that these decisions are not rushed, but are gradual and deliberate choices.
- A drawing will then be submitted with an accurate quotation. This quotation will be a final price, covering supplying, creating, and fixing the piece of work.
- Once this quotation has been accepted, permission for placement may have to be sought from a parish vicar or town clerk. I will approach the relevant authority on your behalf.
- When approval has been granted, the unworked stone is ordered. Dependent on size, this takes approximately six weeks to arrive.
- After shaping and preparing the stone, the design is drawn on and the client is invited to review the work. This is a vital stage, as it offers the opportunity to make any final changes. Once the client is fully satisfied, cutting will begin.
- On completion of cutting, the work may require painting or gilding. Wall fixings are also selected, where applicable.
- The piece is brought to the site and fixed into place.
