Scallop shell carving in Portland Stone, Holywell Music Room, Oxford
The acanthus leaves flowing out of the back of this scallop shell echo the Baroque design of the building. The mantling on Victorian coats of arms is said to be inspired by the acanthus leaf. It was necessary to undercut the carving to make it stand out well from the background.
